I then realized/remembered I will be there at any point between this current moment of consciousness and my last.

This immediately rearranged my day. I am not God, I will die. I must deal with this each and every day.

Who is telling me that I will die one day?

The TV isn’t:
The TV tries to convince you that’s what happens to other people. It tells you to keep; keep jockeying for position, booking 5 star vacations, buying anti-aging cream, trying to screw the un-screwable, lifting weights and dieting, etc.

Your friends aren’t:
No one likes to be a debbie downer, I don’t. I drown my advice with the practical rarely considering that the person I speak with will one day die.

Your parent’s don’t:
Parents hate to think about their children dying…..so they don’t talk about it. They tell us to strive for goals, don’t be like ‘tommy’ down the street, and to eat our vegetables so we don’t get sick. Not blaming parents, they are there for protection of sorts……however the message of death shouldn’t be shielded from us but we should learn how to process the restraints of life, called death.

And most of things you read don’t:
The self-help, gossip, car, gun, hair books and magazines don’t mention it. They show you images on paper that creates the insatiable that has no room to consider the inevitable.

I am there with you. read my last post….and that’s why I post this.

**I think a subject called ‘death education’ should be taught in grade school….this may rearrange current capitalistic constraints currently felt amongst the masses as we all position for the infinite…..realizing too late it was all futile.

Faith{starts - ends}Faith

I was dead spiritually at a certain point in time. I am no longer dead spiritually but I am alive. What this means is that I prefer, have leanings, desire God to be much and Roy to be null (more explained here). I was dead, not injured, not handicapped, not confused….DEAD and I am now alive. What did this to me was an ‘agent’ outside of myself, I did nothing smart, superior, righteous to call the ‘agent’ into being and/or make it answer my beckon call.

What I find is that since being alive I also fall asleep. (it’s weird how simple yet not this subject really is)

The same ‘agent’ that moved me from being spiritually dead to spiritually alive is the same that causes me to also wake from my slumber.

So in short, my salvation experience is not different from my awakening experience. both start and end with faith and that is the largest denominator of the equation i now speak of.

“It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” - Romans 1:17

So we can stop being idiots

I am known by a few people for speaking my mind. This allows me to have super close friends while also staying away from half-ass friends. (you know those people in your phone book you don’t ever call and when they call you screen them)

However behind the scenes and a reason I speak my mind is because i am attempting to speak to my own mind. You see, we all settle, fall in traps, lose view of what life really is…I of which am horrible at…..SO….when I am thinking straight, aka in the spirit, I often like to speak truth out loud to a company of friends in hope:

it encourages and/or admonishes them, so that they can wrestle with the truth

it allows them to hold me accountable and ask me why I have lost my way when i eventually do

“Who does he think he is?”

is almost the immediate question that follows some of my statements.

I am the son of the King, an heir to the throne of God. So are you. It’s a position given to all saints. Take up the position with me and maybe we can stop being idiots together.

what I have learned about men and women

When men do not connect/hang/love other men they:

don’t lead

their aspirations fizzle

they stare at porn

they get fat and watch reality TV with their wife or girlfriend

they never meet expectations, not even our own

When women do not connect/hang/love other women they;

become nags

they crave control, if they lose it they become more of #1

they hate both men and women

their expectations get higher, no-one can ever meet them

In the end this boils down to where the gospel is meeting you….and if you are meeting with the gospel I believe it eventually leads to healthy same-sex relationships.

**the presupposition is that you have good friends, thanks for the comment Steve.

Photo

great vid

great vid

Knowledge can't be your core competency in a connected world

In 1910 you were considered educated if you possessed the total knowledge found in that day’s paper.

Today, 2010 – what’s the apples to apples comparison?

An example.
If I asked you if you knew what Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is – would you know?
Most likely not.
But if I asked you to find me the answer would you know where to go?
Yes. Google. (they have 70% or so world market share)
So does that mean you actually did know what Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma was the first time I asked, since you could pull up the answer in just a matter of seconds?
Hmmmm.

If you live in a ‘connected culture’ your definition of knowledge (or Epistemology) has radically changed over the last 100 years. If you live in a hut in the Amazon (therefore not reading this post) then your epistemology has changed very little if at all.

So what does this mean?
Niche knowledge industries are becoming a commodity in the ‘connect world’. You see this with how audits and how they are being shopped in the market place right now. Price wins….unless…..you focus beyond ‘knowledge’ on thinks like relationships, trust, and the ability to communicate.

In today’s world, ‘knowing’ tax law has been reduced to the power of search and tax applications. However, if your practice’s success is built on such ‘knowledge’, then you are headed for destruction. On the other hand, if your practice has the ability to communicate, thus transforming knowledge into wisdom (actionable knowledge) then you will become an invaluable partner to your clients.

Below is Google’s Super Bowl ad – also their first ever commercial. An example of what I mean by the example mentioned above.

Technology giveth and taketh away

New technologies are never distributed evenly among the population. This means that every new technology benefits some and harms others

Embedded in every technology there is a powerful idea, sometimes two or three powerful ideas

Technological change is not additive; it is ecological

media tend to become mythic

“What’s past is prologue” - Shakespeare

We have all heard a prayer, though words may differ slightly, that consists of that concept. We may have even been the person praying it. I have. But what does it mean?

Fresh off thanksgiving where we give thanks for health & houses - we often lose sight on what basis to give thanks. I by no means here want to start a notion that I am, nor should we be, not thankful for the material comforts in life; coffee, couches, houses, cars, etc. But if -

He who has God and everything has no more than he who has God alone. - CS Lewis

But If - if this statement holds, how does it effect the way we think about “The Less Fortunate” prayer? What does fortunate mean? Even more important in this context what does ‘less fortunate’ mean? We find our thoughts polarizing if the CS Lewis statement makes sense with our mental model. We must change the way we think and consequentially the way we pray.

The popular notion, religious or not, is that prosperity equals physical comfort. In tandem, since there has been a class system, there is a poor peasant mentality. Don’t you find it interesting that all of people, you and I, have a ‘grass is greener’ complex. Always wanting more, thinking about the ‘what ifs’ of life, and so on. At the same time we have a ‘grass is browner’ complex, where we begin to compare what we have versus the have nots. Both complexes will lead to a soiled fount, because in both cases we find comparison is the thief of joy. Joy is not found in but One have or have not. Have or have not Him? That question & answer is the chief of all pursuits and pleasures.

If you agree with CS Lewis then your prayer must change and become singular. If you disagree, then you can be thankful that you are not me - for I must be the lesser, less fortunate, one.

watch this. at least have an opinion.

watch this. at least have an opinion.

Cloud Computing is like an Electric Toothbrush

No really, it is.

Have you made the leap to an electric toothbrush yet? If yes then you understand where I am going with this post. If not, that’s okay but know your life is about to change!

Don’t get me wrong, nothing is wrong with the old-fashioned toothbrush. It works as advertised. People have been using it for years, it is a good deal at $4 or less, and you just need water and toothpaste for it to work. So why would you change? You don’t have a cavity, the cost is nominal, and it’s a known quantity. I had the same thoughts at one point; here is a brief story about my journey.

It all began when I was on a trip and saw a friend brushing with a Philips Sonicare (I am not being paid for this) and began to question them on why they would dare spend $120 on a toothbrush. “I care about my teeth, that’s why,” they said. I was offended. I care about my teeth, I brush them 2+ times a day and floss when I can – how do they know I don’t care about my teeth?

This conversation started my research into the topic of electric toothbrushes versus the traditional type. I read websites, packaging, company promises, and asked my dentist and friends. In the end it came down to 2 things: 1) what did my dentist have to say about it and 2) what friends used the brush and did they have better teeth than my other friends who didn’t use the electric.

My dentist has a good business; I don’t think he was being paid off when he told me that I was crazy not to use the Sonicare (he even said to use specifically a Sonicare) and that it would be an investment that would pay dividends. Then I talked to my friends and I found a consensus amongst those who use an electric – they, by and large, have a whiter smile and a cheaper dental bill.

Within 24hrs after being convinced, I found myself on Amazon.com reading reviews on the different Sonicare brushes. I took the plunge and haven’t looked back since. I now walk the streets with confidence as I flash my pearly whites. I no longer dread the dentist and even look forward to hearing their compliments at how good of job I am doing on keeping my teeth clean.

How does this have anything to do with Cloud Computing? I’m glad you asked. Let me attempt to tie the two together.

Like a traditional toothbrush, a traditional network (*a server-based network inside your four walls, managed and replaced every few years) works as advertised. It’s been doing the job for years, it’s relatively inexpensive upfront, and is also a known quantity. You just need time (water) and money (toothpaste) to make it work. Why would your business switch?

I won’t be as offensive as my friend and say it’s because you don’t care about your business, I know you do! But have you considered making the switch to Cloud Computing? Maybe yes, maybe no– either way, talk to your peers and industry consultants about the latest happenings with Cloud Computing. Which option is the most efficient? Which one has the lowest cost of ownership? Which one keeps you more secure and your work flow cleaner? In short, technology now has options – there are multiple models that will support your business model.

In the end I made my toothbrush decision for 2 key reasons:
1) Less Pain: I don’t have to tell you, toothaches ruin your day. It’s such a small piece of your body, yet it paralyzes you when something so fundamental goes wrong. The technology parallel is alarming. As a business, it’s about you providing value to your clients. It’s your experience, ability to listen, and guidance that creates the value. BUT if you have technology pains, it will hinder everything else in your business, including your ability to deliver.

2) Lower Cost of Ownership: No way to slice it, an electric toothbrush is about 30x more expensive than a normal toothbrush upfront. BUT add a few cavities that could have been avoided by using a more proficient device and you are talking about a serious role reversal in the above cost scenario. Networks are the same way, where cavities and root canals come in the form of security breaches and downtime – a mismanaged network will cost you far more over the life of your business than a proficient computing model that has been realized with Cloud Computing.

Where? Here? no...really? yes. really. not there. not that place you are looking.

Many of us go to work and then go home. Then to work and then go home. Repeat Repeat Repeat. Many of us find this either daunting and wrought with pressure or absolutely toilsome which causes us to ask repeatedly ‘is this all life is about?’.

Well is it….? Is it all that life is about?
Yes on the outside, the routine, the schedule, the __fill in the blank__ ….it is about work and home. That is what life LOOKS like. It’s not what life IS. Via the television (which is where we get most of our ideas/expectations about The ‘shoulds’ in this life) we have learned that we SHOULD spice it up with cars, vaca’, hot chicks, ripped men, board rooms, etc, etc. We see these things and confuse the matter and make purchases, both with our time and our money, that life IS those things.

Yes it sometimes looks like those things, but life IS not found in those things. Life is a bubbling up from the inside rather than a working from outside in. Not the pool but the fountain that fills the pool. Not the flower but the seed.

I am constantly amazed at my heart’s drifting. All of a sudden I look up and the tide has carried me, I have not dug in - I have watched and listened to the TV, I have watched and listened to other people who have watched TV, and my heart, most of all, is the worlds most infamous illusionist.

So today - what now?

My guess is you and I have found ourselves believing shallow/false/idiotic/non-consequential/not the full - truth. We have come to believe that life should be MoRe…but when we have MoRe we are left wanting MoRe. I have begun thinking in terms of commercials and perpetual sunsets on an ocean of unending leisure. This IS NOT Life. You & I have been mislead. You and I have followed the sheep before us only to see the slaughter, how horrific, and have confused it for the majestic.

Alter your definition for life. Alter what you consume knowing it nourishes or mal-nourishes every fiber of your being.

search. consume. truth.

Thome Yorke Video - "All for the best"
